Edwards Community Garden
In the Fall of 2017, Edwards Elementary School, submitted a grant to acquire funds to help build a community garden on our campus. We were lucky enough to be awarded the grant and began planning for our community garden.
Edwards Elementary worked closely with the Green Our Planet Organization to design a garden that would be an outdoor learning lab for Edwards students. During the course of our planning, The Sands Foundation, graciously decided to sponsor our school garden program! On May 18th, 2018 volunteers from the Sands Foundation came out to Edwards and built our Community Garden.
The Sands Foundation Sponsorship was able to extend our garden program for a full 3 years. This means, the Edwards Community Garden will receive care from a farmer each week for 3 years. The farmer will also conduct lessons with students on how to maintain the garden. Edwards students will also have the opportunity to see a chef demonstrate how to use our harvests to create healthy meals and snacks.
One of the most exciting opportunities our Edwards students will have is to participate in a Farmer’s Market. Fifth grade students will be able to plan and run their own Farmer’s Market and the proceeds will go directly to the maintenance of the garden.
At Edwards we are very excited to have our community garden. We can’t wait for our first harvest!
